He had been at the asylum in Saint-Rémy six weeks when they let him paint outdoors again, and he went straight for the cypresses. He wrote to his brother that nobody had painted them the way he saw them — that they were as beautiful in line and proportion as an Egyptian obelisk, and that it astonished him nobody had done it yet.
