#80 Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge — Mug

Van Gogh copied this one in oil, line for line, and hung it on his wall in Paris. What astonished him was the rain: thousands of straight black lines cut into the woodblock and printed over the finished scene, so the shower falls in front of everything rather than behind it. No European painter had thought to do that. Hiroshige made it the year before he died, in a series of a hundred views of Edo. Art Institute of Chicago.
