Munch was walking at sunset with two friends when the sky turned blood red and he stopped, shaking, feeling what he described as an infinite scream passing through nature. The figure in the painting is not making that sound. It is hearing it, with its hands clamped over its ears, while the two friends carry on down the path and notice nothing.
