#27 The Starry Night — Coaster

He painted it from the window of his room in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, looking east about an hour before sunrise. The window had bars across it and he left them out. The village below is not there either — no church with that spire stood in the valley, and he built it from memory of the Netherlands. He told his brother the picture had not come off, and sent it home in a batch he considered studies. It is now the most reproduced night sky ever painted. Museum of Modern Art, New York.
