It is not a night scene. Two centuries of darkening varnish made it look like one and the wrong name stuck so hard that cleaning it in 1947, which revealed broad daylight, did nothing to shift it. The painting has also been cut. In 1715 it was moved to the Amsterdam town hall and trimmed on all four sides to fit between two doors — two figures were sliced off the left edge and have never been recovered. What hangs today is a bright picture with pieces missing. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
