He went out to the island on weekday mornings to draw the light, then built the picture in the studio from small strokes of unmixed colour set side by side, so that the mixing would happen in the eye rather than on the palette. When it was finished he painted a border of dots around the canvas itself, so it would never have to sit inside a gilt frame. Stand close and it is confetti. Step back and it is a Sunday afternoon.
