#31 The Bedroom — Mug

He painted this room three times. The first was made at Arles in 1888 while he waited for Gauguin to arrive; when a flood in the yellow house damaged it he painted this second version in the asylum a year later, and then a third, smaller one to send to his mother and his sister. He wrote that the flat blocks of colour were meant to rest the brain, and he tilted the floor and pushed the walls inward deliberately, so that the room would feel closed and safe.
