Velázquez stands at the left behind a canvas turned away from us, and whatever he is working on stays hidden for good. The king and queen appear only as a small reflection in the mirror on the back wall, which means they are standing roughly where the viewer is standing. It is a painting that quietly puts you in the position of the monarch. Museo del Prado, Madrid.
