#37 Liberty Leading the People — Mug

Delacroix painted it within months of the July Revolution and the new French government bought it almost at once — then kept it out of public view for years, judging that a bare-breasted Liberty striding over corpses might inspire the next uprising rather than commemorate the last one. It was returned to the walls, removed again, and only settled permanently into the Louvre decades later. Louvre, Paris.
