Elizabeth Siddal lay fully clothed in a bath in Millais's studio, warmed by oil lamps underneath, so he could paint the water accurately. On one session the lamps burned out, Millais was too absorbed to notice, and she stayed in the cold water until she was seriously ill. Her father sent Millais the doctor's bill. Tate Britain, London.
