Beneath the bare wall behind the milkmaid, imaging has revealed a large wall map and a laundry basket that Vermeer painted over. He emptied the background deliberately, leaving nothing to compete with a woman pouring milk — and the pour itself is the only thing moving in the picture. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
