Renoir wanted the real dappled light of a Sunday dance garden, so he rented rooms nearby and had the large canvas carried to the Moulin de la Galette and back each day for months. His friends sat as the dancers. The blotches of sunlight falling through the trees onto faces and jackets were the part critics disliked most, and are the reason anyone remembers it.
