Cézanne painted this subject five times and worked in the opposite direction to most artists: he kept removing. The early versions have onlookers standing around the table; by the last, everyone else is gone and two men sit alone with their cards and a single bottle between them. The models were local farm workers from around Aix. Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
