Whistler titled it *Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1* and argued that the identity of the sitter should not matter — the picture was about the balance of tones, not about a person. The public ignored him entirely and named it after his mother, who sat for it, reportedly because the model he had booked did not turn up. Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
