Leutze painted the most famous scene in American history in a studio in Germany, using the Rhine for the ice and German models for the soldiers. The flag in the boat would not be designed for another six months, the boat is the wrong type, and nobody would stand up in one crossing an icy river at night. The first version of the painting was destroyed in an Allied bombing raid on Bremen in 1942; this is the second. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
