#63 Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga — Mug

The boy is holding a magpie on a string, and the magpie is holding Goya's calling card in its beak. In the shadow to the left, three cats are staring at the bird with total concentration, and one of them is staring straight out at you. The cage of finches behind him makes the point again. It is a portrait of a four-year-old in a red suit, and it is also about how briefly anything stays safe. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The story: Goya Signed This Portrait by Putting His Card in a Bird's Beak
