This is the picture that got him hired. Caravaggio was in his mid-twenties and living in the household of Cardinal del Monte, who wanted something for his music room, and it is his first surviving commission of any scale. The boy tuning the lute is the centre; the figure looking out at you over his shoulder, second from the right, is generally taken to be Caravaggio himself. Everyone in it is a real model, not an ideal. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
