#66 Venice, from the Porch of Madonna della Salute — Coaster

Turner visited Venice three times and painted it for the rest of his life from notebooks and memory. This is the view down the Grand Canal from the steps of the Salute, and the buildings are recognisable while being barely painted at all — the Doge's Palace is a suggestion, the gondolas are strokes. He was after the light on the water rather than the architecture, and critics of the day complained he had painted tinted steam. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
