To paint this she went to the horse market in Paris twice a week for a year and a half, dressed as a man, and she had to apply to the police for written permission to do it — trousers required a permit in nineteenth-century France. She got it, renewed it repeatedly, and produced the most celebrated animal painting of the century. It made her famous enough that Queen Victoria had it brought to Buckingham Palace for a private view. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
