The hats get the light and the woman does not. X-rays show her underneath in an ornate hat and a lace-sleeved dress — a customer. Degas painted the hat out, and in the finished picture she is bare-headed and holding a hat she might be making or might be buying, while the hats themselves sit glowing like fruit. Degas made a dozen pastels and paintings of milliners' shops in these years, and in all of them the merchandise is the subject and the maker is at the edge. Art Institute of Chicago.
