#78 Two Sisters (On the Terrace) — Mug

They are not sisters. The older girl was a model called Jeanne Darlaud; the child was found separately, and Renoir put them together on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise restaurant beside the Seine, the same balcony where he painted the boating party. The basket of wool in front of them is there for the colour — five balls of it, each a different shade, to set against the red hat. The title came later, from a dealer. Art Institute of Chicago.
