#81 The Herring Net — Mug

Homer moved to the Maine coast and painted working fishermen the way other artists painted heroes. Two men in a dory are hauling a net of herring aboard in a heavy swell, the schooner they belong to just visible behind them, and nothing about it is picturesque — the boy is braced, the older man is lifting, and the sea is going to keep doing what it is doing. He knew these men. He watched them go out. Art Institute of Chicago.
