He painted his wife Hortense about twenty-nine times, more than any other subject except apples and the mountain, and in none of them does she smile. That has been read as coldness for a century, but Cézanne needed his sitters to hold still for hours across dozens of sessions, and once told a dealer to sit like an apple.
