He came to London for the fog. Monet stayed at the Savoy and worked from a hospital terrace across the river, painting the Houses of Parliament at dusk over three winters, and what he was chasing was the coal smoke — London's air was so thick with it that the sun came through violet, orange or green depending on the day. He wrote that without the fog London would not be beautiful. The building is almost incidental. Art Institute of Chicago.
