The reflection is wrong, and Manet knew it. She faces us straight on, but her reflection stands well to the right and leans in towards a man in a top hat who is not visible in front of the bar at all — so the mirror shows a conversation that, from where we stand, is not happening. Painters have argued about it for a hundred and forty years. It was his last major painting; he was seriously ill while he made it and died the following year. The Courtauld Gallery, London.
